ARCH202 | Case Study

The second term of the new semester began to develop on research and reference concepts. We started to analyze the buildings given by adding our own interpretation. In our analyzes, we have drawn sketches of the points we found important or interesting in the building, together with important details such as the architects of the building and the date of construction. Well, which features should we pay attention to during the period?

Besides the distinctive spatial / architectural qualities that make each building unique, we should provide observations to other minor physical qualities of each building. For doing that we focus on themes like:

  • border conditions: boundaries, peripheries, enclosures, transparency, permeability
  • continuity & discontinuities: continuance of edges or surfaces, visual & other means of relating interior & exterior, relations with topography & landscape…
  • dominance: dominance of one part over others, spatial hierarchy & distribution…
  • motion & movement: the movement patterns inside and outside the building, spaces for circulation & spaces for meeting/gathering, paths connecting the building to its context…
  • interface: hinges, thresholds, edges; spaces for interconnection…
  • tectonics tectonic qualities of the building, choice of material, hinges, structural aspects…

We combine the information that we organize in a system called ADS. ADS means “Accordion Drawing Sketchbook” and we really gave the accordion shape. The structures that I need to investigate are as follows;

Atatürk Kitaplığı / Sedad Hakkı Eldem
Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum / Tadao Ando
Hunt Library / Snøhetta
Oodi Library / ALA / Finland
Bishan Public Library / LOOK Architects
The National Library of Sejong City / Samoo Architects
Freiburg University Library / Degelo Architects

And some notes and skecthes drawing by me;
